The Silverthorne SnowBALL: The art + science + safety + fun of snow, Silverthorne’s January First Friday event will feature an avalanche dog meet and greet, avalanche beacon training and competitions from the Colorado Rapid Avalanche Deployment team; snow science activities for kids from the Keystone Science School; winter-themed crafts from the Frosted Flamingo; and snow painting, snowman building, and sledding (please bring your own sled). A DJ will be on hand providing live entertainment and hot chocolate and adult libations will be available for purchase.

Beginning his two-week engagement in the Town of Silverthorne, internationally acclaimed snow artist, Simon Beck, will begin his artwork at January's First Friday! Beck typically creates his intricate carvings inspired by patterns found in nature and based on mathematics, but he also gleans inspiration from crop circles and famous artists, like Vincent van Gogh. He’s created works that mimic everything from standard snowflakes and fractals to spiraled cactus pears. In total, his snow creations—done both for pleasure and through commissions—now number around 300. Beck will be creating artwork throughout town from January 3 to January 16, starting with a snow mural at Maryland Creek Park on Friday, January 3 at First Friday. 




Activities from the Keystone Science School include: 

  1. Each Snowflake is Unique – Participants can build a snowflake and learn about the basic types of snowflakes and how they are formed as they build their own snowflake with hexagon shapes.
  2. Explore Snow Grains – Participants can use a magnifying glass to get a first-hand look at snow grains and learn how the different types of snow grains react with our snow pack.
  3. Avalanche Boards – Participants can build their own snowpack using flower, sugar, and oats which represent the basic types of snow grains while learning about the basics of avalanche dynamics and the impact of snowpack layers, slope angle, and bed surface.
