The Town of Silverthorne recently created a road map to keep Silverthorne a healthy place to live, work and recreate for generations to come. In a series of blog posts, we've been highlighting the different components of Silverthorne's Sustainability Strategic Plan and what they mean for the community. The Mobility Initiative

Transportation is a necessity, but traffic is a nuisance. Private vehicles exact economic and environmental tolls and creating effective mobility solutions is the fourth pillar of the Town of Silverthorne’s Sustainability Strategic Plan adopted in August 2024.

“We’re looking for more options than just the car to go where we want, in ways that make travel convenient, healthy and enjoyable,” says Kristi D'Agati, Sustainability Coordinator for the Town of Silverthorne. “We're really focusing on encouraging and further developing alternatives to driving alone.”

Town Goals 

For mobility, there are two town goals and one community goal. The town goals are to increase options for employees to travel and work without having to drive alone, and reduce driving required by community members to obtain licenses and permits.

“From the town side, we are identifying what barriers exist that are discouraging our employees from commuting by means other than driving alone, so we can then address these barriers moving forward,” says D’Agati. “We’ll then use education and incentives to encourage participation. This could be transit, carpooling, cycling, walking or working remotely in certain cases, although that's not available to all positions.”

Working with local transit agencies like the Summit Stage to create micro-transit options is also part of the agenda. “They currently have an RFP out to pilot this program,” says D’Agati. “It essentially creates what they're calling virtual stops in areas where there are no bus stops currently. The thought is that a smaller vehicle could go and pick you up in a centralized point in your neighborhood where bus stops currently don’t exist.”

The second innovative goal involves digitizing government processes and interfaces for the Town of Silverthorne, reducing the need for in-person attendance for things like licenses and permit applications. 

“We don't want to take away anyone's accessibility to our services,” explains “D’Agati. “But we want to give the option of not having to drive to town hall or wherever you may need to go, to submit a permit or do things like that.”

Community Goals

For the community portion of the sustainability plan, D’Agati says the goal is to increase options for community members to travel around town without having to drive alone, and points to several policies that were published in the Town of Silverthorne’s comprehensive plan.

“We call it complete street strategies,” says D’Agati. “This can include incorporating design and maintenance policies that enable access for bicycle and pedestrian travel or providing appropriate landscaping to help delineate different methods of transportation. And there are other things like providing safe bicycle parking facilities, improving transportation networks by making sidewalk connections where gaps currently exist and enhancing areas of public activity.” 

Additional strategies to achieve the community mobility goal include working with and supporting the Summit Stage and other regional operators to improve the current transit network with convenient Silverthorne stops, increasing the number and reliability of routes and expanding upon the regional network to improve travel between Denver and Silverthorne.

Serie Sostenibilidad: Movilidad

La Ciudad de Silverthorne creó recientemente un mapa de ruta para mantener a Silverthorne como un lugar saludable para vivir, trabajar y recrearse para las generaciones venideras. En una serie de publicaciones de blog, hemos destacado los diferentes componentes del Plan Estratégico de Sostenibilidad de Silverthorne y lo que significan para la comunidad. La Iniciativa de Movilidad

El transporte es una necesidad, pero el tráfico es una molestia. Los vehículos privados tienen costos exactos económicos y ambientales y la creación de soluciones de movilidad efectivas es el cuarto pilar del Plan Estratégico de Sostenibilidad de la ciudad de Silverthorne adoptado en Agosto de 2024.

"Estamos buscando más opciones que sólo el automóvil para ir a donde queremos, de manera que el viaje sea conveniente, saludable y placentero", dice Kristi D'Agati, Coordinadora de Sostenibilidad de la ciudad de Silverthorne. "Realmente nos estamos centrando en fomentar y seguir desarrollando alternativas a la conducción sola". 

Objetivos del Municipio

Para la movilidad, hay dos objetivos del Municipio y un objetivo comunitario. Los objetivos del Municipio son aumentar las opciones para que los empleados viajen y trabajen sin tener que conducir solos y reducir la conducción requerida por los miembros de la comunidad para obtener licencias y permisos.

"Desde el lado de la ciudad, estamos identificando qué barreras existen que desalientan a nuestros empleados a desplazarse por otros medios que no sean conducir solos, para luego poder abordar estas barreras en el futuro", dice D'Agati. “Luego utilizaremos la educación y los incentivos para fomentar la participación. Esto podría ser transporte público, compartir automóvil, andar en bicicleta, caminar o trabajar de forma remota en ciertos casos, aunque eso no está disponible para todos los puestos”.

Trabajar con agencias de transporte locales como Summit Stage para crear opciones de micro transporte también forma parte de la agenda. "Actualmente tienen una RFP para poner a prueba este programa", dice D'Agati. “Básicamente, crea lo que llaman paradas virtuales en áreas donde actualmente no hay paradas de autobús. La idea es que un vehículo más pequeño pueda ir a recogerte a un punto centralizado de tu vecindario donde actualmente no existen paradas de autobús”. 

El segundo objetivo innovador implica digitalizar los procesos e interfaces gubernamentales para la ciudad de Silverthorne, reduciendo la necesidad de asistencia en persona para asuntos como licencias y solicitudes de permisos.

Metas de la Comunidad

Para la parte comunitaria del plan de sostenibilidad, D'Agati dice que el objetivo es aumentar las opciones para que los miembros de la comunidad viajen por la ciudad sin tener que conducir solos, y señala varias políticas que se publicaron en el plan integral de la ciudad de Silverthorne.

"Lo llamamos estrategias callejeras completas", dice D'Agati. “Esto puede incluir la incorporación de políticas de diseño y mantenimiento que permitan el acceso para ciclistas y peatones o proporcionar un paisaje adecuado para ayudar a delinear diferentes métodos de transporte. Y hay otras cosas como proporcionar estacionamientos seguros para bicicletas, mejorar las redes de transporte conectando las aceras donde actualmente existen brechas y mejorando las áreas de actividad pública”.

Las estrategias adicionales para lograr el objetivo de movilidad comunitaria incluyen trabajar y apoyar a Summit Stage y otros operadores regionales para mejorar la red de transporte actual con paradas convenientes en Silverthorne, aumentar la cantidad y confiabilidad de las rutas y expandir la red regional para mejorar los viajes entre Denver y Silverthorne.
