Born and raised in Summit County, sisters Ariel and Alison Johnston are back in Silverthorne - and have brought with them a new business to fuel the community.

After moving away to attend the University of Colorado in Boulder and then onto Denver for marketing jobs, the two sisters quickly realized Summit County had more to offer than they realized. “When we were in high school, we thought we had already made all the memories we could make here,” said Ariel. “While living in Denver, I started to see that there was so much more to Summit County. Rather than being in Denver and making countless trips to the mountains for all the outdoor adventures, I decided I’d rather have the mountains at my fingertips and make occasional trips to Denver for amenities.”

Upon returning to Summit County eight years ago, Ariel and Alison decided to create their own take on their father’s wholesale souvenir business, which he founded in 1985. With the same entrepreneurial spirit in mind, they opened a store in Dillon called Everything Colorado in 2017. Since then, they’ve expanded the concept to three other shops, with the latest opening in Silverthorne.

Moving into the Outlets at Silverthorne last fall and celebrating the official grand opening in January, the store offers Colorado-themed souvenirs and gifts, as well as artisan items that are authentic, handmade in Colorado and offer a feel for the people of Colorado. In addition, the duo produces their own t-shirt and hat designs, working with local artists who earn commission on the items that sell with their design. This program not only provides a great opportunity for visitors to purchase something handmade from a local, but also offers a recurring revenue stream for local artists - a model the sisters hope to continue and expand.

Some of their favorite items in the shop include offerings from local artists, a local calendula cream from Green Earth Farms that “cures all” and Treeline Candles from Steamboat that are shaped like topography from different mountains around the state, including Buffalo Mountain, the Breck peaks and Keystone.

Now in business for nearly eight years, Ariel and Alison are passionate about building a business they enjoy being in, one that customers enjoy coming to and a place that their employees enjoy working. With a special interest in human resources, Ariel has been a strong proponent of creating a team of people who want to work somewhere where they can provide input and create value, and offering them insights and teaching them about business along the way.

Moving forward, Ariel is excited to become more involved and grow the community from a business standpoint. “It’s been amazing to be part of this business community and we hope to continue fostering good leadership for other local businesses in Summit County. Because Silverthorne can be somewhat of a transient community, the people managing businesses here have to work extra hard - and we want to be a dominant force in helping grow the workforce in our community.”
