Since 2017, the window boxes on the West side of the Silverthorne Performing Arts Center have featured rotating art, but the pieces haven’t always gotten the attention they deserved as the location is primarily only viewable by car. Recently, the Silverthorne Art Selection Committee brought up stained glass art as a solution for the window boxes, referencing the way the sun and light bounce off stained glass to create a great experience for a variety of viewing angles and passerbyers, including those driving by. 

Upon researching stained glass artists across Colorado, they found Loveland-based Abraxis Art Glass and reached out for a custom piece to fit the space. To fill the two window slots, Alan Kempkes from Abraxis designed a piece that was customized into two separate sections and uniquely fit the layout. With a large upper window and a smaller bottom window, he was challenged to configure the design into two pieces that worked in conjunction with each other. 

Working with the Town of Silverthorne on the glass art, inspiration included everything from musical instruments to straight lines, curves and organic pieces. Taking these as a starting point, Alan created several variations and ultimately ended up with a modified, curvier version that resembled a woman dancing. A representation of movement, dance, music and performing arts, the color choices of blue and white pay homage to the flowing Blue River outside and the nearby groomed slopes and ski town vibe of Silverthorne. 

To create the pieces, he first sketched with a pencil, then refined and drew them in Auto CAD. After the digital version was created, he made a full-size drawing, had it printed on large pieces of paper to form the pattern and then cut the glass alongside it before assembling.   

For nearly 20 years, Alan has worked with Abraxis, a custom door and glass shop focused on high-end products. “Most of what we do is out of the ordinary,” said Abraxis Art Glass Owner Adam Martinez. “People come to us for pieces that no one else wants to do given the difficulty and specialty desired.” Though the business is focused primarily on doors, the team also works on glass pieces within residential properties, including stained glass windows or custom artwork for showers.  

Alan has been etching his craft in stained glass for nearly 50 years. His specialties include woodworking and sculpture, but the diversity of glass really holds his heart. Once based in Loveland, he also lived in Windsor, then semi-retired and moved to Montana, where he currently resides. His love for stained glass has kept him from fully retiring, as he helps people across the state enjoy the beauty of stained glass.

La Nueva Exhibición de Vidrieras en el Centro de Artes Teatrales de Silverthorne Representa las Múltiples Facetas del Arte

Desde 2017, los vitrales del lado oeste del Centro de Artes Teatrales de Silverthorne han exhibido arte rotativo, pero las piezas no siempre han recibido la atención que merecían, ya que el lugar solo se puede ver principalmente en auto. Recientemente, el Comité de Selección de Arte de Silverthorne propuso el arte de las vidrieras como una solución en referencia a la forma en que el sol y la luz se reflejan en ellas creando una experiencia inolvidable para diversos ángulos de visión y para los transeúntes, incluyendo a los que pasan en auto.

Tras investigar a los artistas de vitrales en Colorado, encontraron a Abraxis Art Glass, con sede en Loveland, y buscaron una pieza personalizada que se adaptara al espacio. Para llenar los huecos de las dos ventanas, Alan Kempkes, de Abraxis, diseñó una pieza que se personalizó en dos secciones separadas y se adaptó a la perfección al diseño. Con una gran ventana superior y una inferior más pequeña, se enfrentó al reto de configurar el diseño en dos piezas que funcionaran en conjunto.

Al colaborar con el municioio de Silverthorne en la creación del arte en vidrio, la inspiración incluyó desde instrumentos musicales hasta líneas rectas, curvas y piezas orgánicas. Partiendo de esto, Alan creó diversas variaciones y finalmente creó una versión modificada y más curvilínea que evocaba una mujer bailando. Representando el movimiento, la danza, la música y las artes escénicas, la elección de colores azul y blanco rinde homenaje al Blue River que fluye en el exterior, también las pistas de esquí cercanas y el ambiente de Silverthorne.

Para crear las piezas, primero dibujó a lápiz, luego las perfeccionó y dibujó en Auto CAD (siglas en Inglés para un diseño asistido por computadora). Tras crear la versión digital, hizo un dibujo a tamaño real, lo imprimió en hojas grandes de papel para formar el patrón y luego cortó el vidrio a su lado antes de ensamblarlo.

Durante casi 20 años, Alan ha trabajado con Abraxis, una tienda de puertas y vidrios personalizados especializada en productos de alta gama. "La mayor parte de lo que hacemos es fuera de lo común", dijo Adam Martínez, propietario de Abraxis Art Glass. "La gente acude a nosotros por piezas que nadie más quiere hacer, dada la dificultad y la especialidad que se busca". Aunque el negocio se centra principalmente en puertas, el equipo también trabaja con piezas de vidrio en propiedades residenciales, incluyendo vidrieras o obras de arte personalizadas para duchas.

Alan lleva casi 50 años grabando su arte en vitrales. Sus especialidades incluyen la carpintería y la escultura, pero la diversidad del vidrio es lo que realmente le apasiona. Anteriormente residió en Loveland, también vivió en Windsor, luego se jubiló parcialmente y se mudó a Montana, donde reside ahorita. Su pasión por los vitrales le ha impedido jubilarse por completo, ya que ayuda a personas de todo el estado a disfrutar de la belleza de vidrieras.
