A seasoned oil painter whose journey spans continents, mountain towns and decades of creative exploration, Jennifer Baker has a deep connection to the natural world and a passion for expression. Now, as one of the newest studio artists at the Art Spot, Jennifer brings her enthusiasm and energy to Silverthorne’s growing arts community.

Born in Florida, she started painting as a kid and left home at 17 to attend art school in New York City. Afterward, she pursued graduate studies in Albuquerque. From there, she often headed north to Summit County, where the mountains felt like home. After graduating with her master’s, she went to Italy, fell in love with – and married – an Italian. The couple raised two sons in a mountain village tucked between Milan and Venice, coming back to Colorado from time to time. 

Jennifer’s mom brought her back to the States. When her mother moved to Breckenridge in 2007, Jennifer and her family followed so that her boys could attend high school in the States at Summit County High School. Since then, she’s split her time between Breckenridge and Italy.

Until now. Starting this May, she will make Summit County her full-time home as she focuses attention on her new studio at the Art Spot.

With a vast range of experience, Jennifer’s favorite technique is oil painting, which she says is “a big commitment. You need space and ventilation, it’s not something you can do at the kitchen table, and that type of space is hard to come by in Summit County.”

Her paintings, mostly large, contemporary and abstract oils, explore themes of space, light and the raw beauty of nature. While her home in Italy offers lush greenery and natural flowers, it’s the vast nature found in Summit County that truly reflects the heart of her work. Inspired by the expansive skies, wind, and light reflections, her work conveys the emotional and physical presence of the landscape. “I try to capture where the sky meets the water,” she says, pointing to Lake Dillon. “I want people to feel what it’s like to stand in that space, wherever they are.”

During the pandemic, Jennifer moved back to Italy and focused on her creative life. “I decided to use the lockdown time to dedicate to my art and figure out how to market myself,” she says. “I was really bad at showing my work, even after having a lot of success. So I needed to figure out how to market myself better.”

To start, she launched an Instagram account for her work, @jenniferbakerpaintings, which quickly gained traction. Soon after, she had several successful shows in Italy, one featuring 40 paintings. “I sold almost everything,” she said. “It showed me that I could pursue art and live off of my creative work. It was one of the coolest moments of my life.” 

At the same time, she ran a successful freelance translation business but yearned for more creativity in her life. This renewed focus confirmed that painting was where she wanted to put her efforts. “Painting doesn’t feel like work to me. It literally feels like why I’m on the planet, so I wanted that to be my full-time gig.”

But 2024 brought an unexpected and difficult chapter when Jennifer was diagnosed with breast cancer while in Italy. After a challenging year, she’s now in recovery and even more determined to build a life rooted in creativity and connection. “I want to bring my work from the online space and galleries into a physical studio where I can be part of a community. That’s what I’m so excited about the Art Spot in Silverthorne.”

Jennifer’s new studio at the Art Spot will serve primarily as her working space, but she’s also looking forward to engaging with the public. “I currently sell mostly online, but I want people to be able to stand in front of my work,” she says. “Having a dedicated space to paint in Summit is gold - it’s very hard to find, so I’m feeling very thankful.”

She plans to keep studio hours when people can drop in, view her process and connect with her. Eventually, she may also teach art and classes about the business of being an artist. “I want to help people learn how to let go when making art, to learn that they don’t have to be in control.”

Jennifer Baker Encuentra Su Hogar Creativo en El Art Spot

Jennifer Baker, una experimentada pintora al óleo cuya trayectoria abarca continentes, pueblos de montaña y décadas de exploración creativa, posee una profunda conexión con el mundo natural y una gran pasión por la expresión. Ahora, como una de las artistas de estudio más recientes de Art Spot, Jennifer aporta su entusiasmo y energía a la creciente comunidad artística de Silverthorne.

Nacida en Florida, empezó a pintar de niña y dejó su hogar a los 17 años para asistir a la escuela de arte en Nueva York. Después, realizó estudios de posgrado en Albuquerque. Desde allí, solía dirigirse al norte, al condado de Summit, donde las montañas se sentían como su hogar. Tras graduarse con su maestría, viajó a Italia, se enamoró de un italiano y se casó con él. La pareja crió a sus dos hijos en un pueblo de montaña entre Milán y Venecia, y regresaba a Colorado de vez en cuando.

La madre de Jennifer la trajo de vuelta a Estados Unidos. Cuando su madre se mudó a Breckenridge en 2007, Jennifer y su familia la siguieron para que sus hijos pudieran asistir a la preparatoria en Estados Unidos, en la Escuela Preparatoria del Condado de Summit. Desde entonces, divide su tiempo entre Breckenridge e Italia.

Hasta ahora. A partir de mayo, residirá a tiempo completo en el condado de Summit mientras se centra en su nuevo estudio en Art Spot.

Con una amplia experiencia, la técnica favorita de Jennifer es la pintura al óleo, que, según ella, implica “un gran compromiso. Se necesita espacio y ventilación; no es algo que se pueda hacer en la mesa de la cocina, y ese tipo de espacio es difícil de conseguir en el condado de Summit”.

Sus pinturas, en su mayoría óleos abstractos, contemporáneos y de gran formato, exploran temas como el espacio, la luz y la belleza natural de la naturaleza. Si bien su hogar en Italia ofrece exuberante vegetación y flores naturales, es la vasta naturaleza del condado de Summit la que verdaderamente refleja la esencia de su obra. Inspirada por los cielos inmensos, el viento y los reflejos de la luz, su obra transmite la presencia emocional y física del paisaje. "Intento capturar el encuentro del cielo con el agua", dice, señalando el lago Dillon. "Quiero que la gente sienta lo que se siente estar en ese espacio, dondequiera que esté". 

Durante la pandemia, Jennifer regresó a Italia y se centró en su vida creativa. "Decidí aprovechar el confinamiento para dedicarme a mi arte y a descubrir cómo promocionarme", dice. "Yo era muy mala en mostrar mi trabajo, incluso después de haber tenido mucho éxito. Así que necesitaba descubrir cómo promocionarme mejor".

Para empezar, creó una cuenta de Instagram para su obra, @jenniferbakerpaintings, que rápidamente cobró popularidad. Poco después, realizó varias exposiciones exitosas en Italia, una de ellas con 40 pinturas. "Vendí casi todo", dijo. "Me demostró que podía dedicarme al arte y vivir de mi trabajo creativo. Fue uno de los momentos más increíbles de mi vida".

Al mismo tiempo, dirigía un exitoso negocio de traducción independiente, pero anhelaba más creatividad en su vida. Este renovado enfoque confirmó que la pintura era donde quería centrar sus esfuerzos. “Pintar no me parece un trabajo. Literalmente siento que es la razón de mi existencia, así que quería que fuera mi trabajo a tiempo completo”.

Pero 2024 trajo consigo un capítulo inesperado y difícil cuando a Jennifer le diagnosticaron cáncer de mama mientras estaba en Italia. Tras un año difícil, ahora se está recuperando y está aún más decidida a construir una vida basada en la creatividad y la conexión. "Quiero trasladar mi trabajo del espacio online y las galerías a un estudio físico donde pueda formar parte de una comunidad. Por eso me entusiasma tanto Art Spot en Silverthorne".

*El nuevo estudio de Jennifer en Art Spot le servirá principalmente como espacio de trabajo, pero también está deseando interactuar con el público. "Actualmente vendo principalmente en línea, pero quiero que la gente pueda ver mi trabajo", dice. "Tener un espacio dedicado a pintar en Summit es oro; es muy difícil de encontrar, así que me siento muy agradecida". 

Planea mantener un horario de estudio donde la gente pueda acercarse, observar su proceso y conectar con ella. Con el tiempo, también podría impartir clases de arte y sobre el oficio de artista. "Quiero ayudar a la gente a aprender a dejarse llevar al crear arte, a que aprendan que no tienen por qué tener el control".
