After a year of teaching part-time art classes at the Art Spot, Olesia Lawrence is thrilled to step into a new role as the studio’s newest resident artist.

Olesia first moved to Summit County seven years ago and realized that the area hadn’t quite developed its arts scene as much as she’d hoped. A naturally creative person, she found herself spending more time in Breckenridge, where the creative arts community was more established at the time. Eventually, she moved to the East Coast in search of more opportunities in the arts but stayed in touch with the friends she had made in Summit County. As news of the Art Spot Silverthorne Makerspace and Silverthorne’s overall priority of integrating more arts into the community began to spread, those friends urged her to return. Eventually, she did. In 2024, she moved back to teach a variety of classes at the Art Spot, specializing in watercolor painting. Last month, she was named the newest studio artist.

Olesia calls herself the “bird lady.” She’s drawn to small birds for their intricate colors, textures and personalities. Yet her talents span a range of subjects: landscapes, wildlife, floral pieces and custom pet portraits. “I couldn’t feel more fortunate to be here in Colorado to draw inspiration from the natural beauty that surrounds me,” she shares.

Originally from Ukraine, Olesia discovered the arts as a young child, painting before she started talking. Although her family wasn’t particularly creative (her father was an engineer and her mother was a kindergarten teacher), her path as an artist was clear. Sketchpad in hand, she was always drawing, and one of her earliest pieces was a portrait of her beloved black cat, foreshadowing her enduring love for pet portraits.

She has always made time to create, even as she’s worked multiple jobs to support her art and moved from place to place, but she rarely had dedicated studio space. So when the Silverthorne Art Board announced the availability of three private studio spaces for artists at the Art Spot in 2025, she applied, despite having doubts about her chances. To her surprise and delight, she was selected. “I know how many qualified artists there are in the talented Silverthorne arts community, but I decided to take the leap and apply,” she says. “Getting the call that I had been chosen was one of the best pieces of news I’ve had in a long time.”

Having long dreamed of having her own creative space, a cozy corner to both work and connect with other artists or aspiring artists, she plans to offer original watercolor and oil artwork, wildlife and landscape prints, handmade jewelry and custom commissions. But beyond selling her art, she loves to share and inspire others to discover their artistic talents. “It is literally a dream come true to be able to do the thing I love and share it with others,” she said.

Prior to joining the Art Spot, Olesia worked on a variety of creative projects, including restaurant murals, local art markets, and music festivals, where she displayed her polymer clay work and jewelry design. She’s also worked in retail, restaurants, and customer service roles across Summit County.

As she steps into this new chapter, Olesia plans to spend most days in her Art Spot studio creating new work and will continue teaching one or two classes on weekends. Un Querido Instructor fue Nombrado el Nuevo Artista de Estudio en Art Spot

Después de un año de enseñar clases de arte a tiempo parcial en Art Spot, Olesia Lawrence está encantada de asumir un nuevo rol como la artista residente más nueva del estudio.

Olesia se mudó al condado de Summit County hace siete años y se dio cuenta de que la escena artística de la zona no se había desarrollado tanto como esperaba. Creativa por naturaleza, pasó más tiempo en Breckenridge, donde la comunidad artística estaba más consolidada en aquel entonces. Finalmente, se mudó a la Costa Este en busca de más oportunidades artísticas, pero mantuvo el contacto con los amigos que había hecho en el condado de Summit. A medida que se difundía la noticia del Art Spot Silverthorne Makerspace y la prioridad general de Silverthorne de integrar más arte en la comunidad, esos amigos la animaron a regresar. Finalmente, lo hizo. En 2024, regresó para impartir diversas clases en Art Spot, especializándose en acuarela. El mes pasado, fue nombrada la artista de estudio más reciente. 

Olesia se autodenomina la "señora de las aves". Le atraen las aves pequeñas por sus intrincados colores, texturas y personalidades. Sin embargo, su talento abarca una amplia gama de temas: paisajes, vida silvestre, piezas florales y retratos personalizados de mascotas. "No podría sentirme más afortunada de estar aquí en Colorado para inspirarme en la belleza natural que me rodea", comparte.

Originaria de Ucrania, Olesia descubrió el arte de pequeña, pintando antes de empezar a hablar. Aunque su familia no era especialmente creativa (su padre era ingeniero y su madre, maestra de jardín de ninos), su camino como artista estaba claro. Con su bloc de dibujo en mano, siempre estaba dibujando, y una de sus primeras obras fue un retrato de su querido gato negro, presagiando su inquebrantable amor por los retratos de mascotas.

Siempre ha tenido tiempo para crear, incluso tras trabajar en varios empleos para mantener su arte y mudarse de un lugar a otro, pero rara vez contaba con un espacio de estudio propio. Así que, cuando la Junta de Arte de Silverthorne anunció la disponibilidad de tres estudios privados para artistas en el Art Spot en 2025, se postuló, a pesar de tener dudas sobre sus posibilidades. Para su sorpresa y alegría, fue seleccionada. "Sé cuántos artistas cualificados hay en la talentosa comunidad artística de Silverthorne, pero decidí arriesgarme y postularme", dice. "Recibir la llamada de que me habían seleccionado fue una de las mejores noticias que he recibido en mucho tiempo".

Tras soñar durante mucho tiempo con tener su propio espacio creativo, un rincón acogedor donde trabajar y conectar con otros artistas o aspirantes a artistas, planea ofrecer obras originales en acuarela y óleo, grabados de vida silvestre y paisajes, joyería artesanal y encargos personalizados. Pero además de vender su arte, le encanta compartir e inspirar a otros a descubrir su talento artístico. "Es literalmente un sueño hecho realidad poder hacer lo que me apasiona y compartirlo con los demás", dijo. 

Antes de unirse a Art Spot, Olesia trabajó en diversos proyectos creativos, incluyendo murales en restaurantes, mercados de arte locales y festivales de música, donde exhibió sus obras de arcilla polimérica y diseño de joyería. También trabajó en comercios minoristas, restaurantes y en atención al cliente en el condado de Summit.

Al comenzar esta nueva etapa, Olesia planea pasar la mayoría de los días en su estudio Art Spot creando nuevas obras y continuará impartiendo una o dos clases los fines de semana.
