A Splash of Color with a Purpose: New Recycling Wall Mural 

If you’ve visited the Silverthorne Recycling Center recently, you’ve likely noticed something new - a vibrant, geometric mural stretching across the recycling wall, transforming an everyday errand into a moment of color and education. This new public artwork, created by nationally traveling artist Jesse Jentzen, was designed to do more than brighten the space: It’s meant to inspire a deeper connection with sustainability and the natural world around us.

Art That Stands Out and Sends a Message

When Jesse first arrived on-site, he knew right away that the mural shouldn’t blend in with the surrounding landscaping. Instead, he leaned into primary colors and bold geometric forms to create something eye-catching that contrasted with the area in the best possible way, while also matching the other art in the area.

The design is an abstract interpretation of commonly recycled materials like cans, bottles, and glass flowing rhythmically across the 1,400-square-foot fence. Interwoven with these shapes are local birds whose silhouettes mirror the curves and angles of those recycled items.

“I wanted something that felt uplifting and positive,” Jesse said. “Birds connect us to nature, and they’re also a reminder that recycling matters, as animals can be harmed when we don’t take care of our waste properly. This mural is a chance to spark that awareness in a friendly way.”

The mural was intentionally created to be visually engaging from both up close and afar, greeting people as they ride by on the nearby trail or pull into the recycling area.

A Project That Challenged the Artist’s Boundaries

While Jesse generally approaches his work with realism, specializing in mood-driven portrait work, this project required a different approach. First, the overall vibe was completely different, but so was the medium. The fence was porous, weathered and full of natural gaps, making fine detail work nearly impossible.

“I knew traditional brushes wouldn’t work here,” he explained. “So I used rollers and a soaking technique to prime the surface and make sure the color came through.”

The result? A bright, uplifting mural that took seven days and more than 60 hours of work to complete.

Meet the Artist

Art has been part of Jesse’s life since childhood. His mother was an artist, and he grew up painting for joy long before it became his profession. Today, his career spans the country as he creates large-scale murals, teaches art classes for both youth and adults, and owns a tattoo studio with four artists that he manages when he’s back home in Redding, Calif. Although he’s technically based in Redding, Jesse regularly travels for art commissions. His work can be found in Colorado, Florida, Texas, Northern California, and beyond. When he’s not creating, you’ll find him surfing, working out, or hanging out with his cat.

Esta nueva obra pública, creada por el artista itinerante nacional Jesse Jentzen, fue diseñada para hacer más que alegrar el espacio: busca inspirar una conexión más profunda con la sostenibilidad y con el mundo natural que nos rodea.

Arte que Destaca y Transmite un Mensaje

Cuando Jesse llegó al lugar, supo de inmediato que el mural no debía mezclarse con el paisaje circundante. En cambio, se inclinó por colores primarios y formas geométricas audaces para crear algo llamativo que contrastará con la zona de la mejor manera posible, a la vez que armonizaba con el resto del arte de la zona.

El diseño es una interpretación abstracta de materiales comúnmente reciclados, como latas, botellas y vidrio, que fluyen rítmicamente a lo largo de la valla de 130 metros cuadrados. Entrelazadas con estas formas se encuentran aves locales cuyas siluetas reflejan las curvas y ángulos de estos artículos reciclados.

“Quería algo inspirador y positivo”, dijo Jesse. “Las aves nos conectan con la naturaleza y también nos recuerdan la importancia del reciclaje, ya que los animales pueden resultar perjudicados si no gestionamos adecuadamente nuestros desechos. Este mural es una oportunidad para despertar esa conciencia de una forma amigable”.

El mural fue creado intencionalmente para ser visualmente atractivo tanto de cerca como de lejos, saludando a las personas cuando pasan por el sendero cercano o se dirigen al área de reciclaje.

Un Proyecto que Desafió los Límites del Artista

Aunque Jesse suele abordar su trabajo con realismo, especializándose en retratos inspirados en la atmósfera, este proyecto requirió un enfoque diferente. En primer lugar, la atmósfera general era completamente distinta, pero también lo era el medio. La valla era porosa, desgastada y llena de huecos naturales, lo que imposibilitaba el trabajo con detalles finos.

"Sabía que las brochas tradicionales no servirían aquí", explicó. "Así que usé rodillos y una técnica de remojo para preparar la superficie y asegurar que el color se pudiera pasar".

¿El resultado? Un mural brillante y estimulante que tardó siete días y más de 60 horas de trabajo en completarse.
