Silverthorne’s signature event series, First Friday, began in 2018 as an initiative launched by the Silverthorne Art Board, a volunteer committee established in 2016 to guide arts and culture in town. Each First Friday is unique and brings residents and visitors alike together to celebrate Silverthorne’s vibrant and diverse community.

February’s First Friday Wish Lantern Festival is no different. Back in 2018, Isabel Rodriguez, a teacher and a newly appointed Silverthorne Art Board member, was excited to contribute to the community. Isabel grew up in Denver and moved to Summit County in 2014 to teach second grade at Dillon Valley Elementary, where she helped establish the school's baile folklorico dance program. After four years of teaching, Isabel was ready for a change and decided to apply to the Silverthorne Art Board while earning her master's in arts leadership and cultural management at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. “Art and creativity are so ingrained into Mexican culture, and it presents itself in many forms, from music to dance and through creative thinking,” said Isabel. “I wanted to elevate that part of my culture and share the joy it brings me with others.”

As an Art Board member, Isabel saw February First Friday as an opportunity to share her Mexican heritage and highlight the diversity of Summit County on a bigger stage. “Living in Summit County and growing up, I always felt like there was so much diversity in our community, but it was not always celebrated, or sometimes people get stuck in their bubbles and don’t try to get out of them. Community events all felt the same and had the same food, music and audience.”

“I remember meeting with Sydney Drake (Arts, Events and Venues Director) many times at the Silverthorne Recreation Center to talk about my ideas and to create an inclusive event together.” Isabel continues, “Noche de Candela was inspired by Dia de la Candelaria (Candlemas) and Lunar New Year.” This celebration is a syncretism of Catholic, Spanish, and indigenous traditions. It is considered a time of new beginnings and purification and is linked to the start of the agricultural cycle. “I was really focused on the idea of the closing of a cycle and the search for light in the cold of winter. The lanterns came from the use of candles, the idea of searching for light and creating our own,” said Isabel.

Other elements incorporated into the event included live music and salsa dancing. “At the time, Remezcla was just getting started, and First Friday seemed like the perfect place for them to begin their journey.”

The Lunar New Year also happens at the same time of year. “I loved that different cultures in different parts of the world celebrated the same concept at the same time of year. I wanted to bring that celebration to Silverthorne,” Isabel explained.

The February First Friday Wish Lantern Festival was originally called Noche de Candela. When brainstorming the name, Isabel wanted to capture the event's sentiment and elements. “Candela in Spanish refers to the warmth emitted by a candle and to the warmth and shine of sweat that the body gives off when dancing and celebrating together—the kind of warmth that you need in February. Combining these elements is how I got the name Noche de Candela for February First Friday.”

Since its creation, February First Friday has grown and evolved and so has its name. At the Wish Lantern Festival, community members can continue celebrating the fusion of cultural traditions as we welcome a new year, enjoy live music with Remezcla, decorate wish lanterns and end the night with a dragon dance by the Colorado Asian Cultural Heritage Center. Community members are also invited to bring a wish or intention to share. When reminiscing about February First Friday, Isabel said, “I love this event so much; it is my contribution to my community. It was a creative solution to the question of how to incorporate cultural diversity into an event at a time of year when we have a lot in common. The diversity of our community is so precious! Our people are more than just workers; we can all be creators and share our joys if given the chance.”

Primer Viernes de febrero: de la Noche de Candela al Festival de las Linternas de los Deseos

La emblemática serie de eventos de Silverthorne, Primer Viernes, comenzó en 2018 como una iniciativa puesta en marcha por la Mesa Directiva de Silverthorne, un comité de voluntarios creado en 2016 para promover las artes y la cultura en el pueblo. Cada Primer Viernes es único y reúne a residentes y visitantes para celebrar la vibrante y diversa comunidad de Silverthorne.

El Primer Viernes Wish Lantern Festival de febrero no es una excepción. En 2018, Isabel Rodríguez, profesora y recién nombrada miembro de la Mesa Directiva de Silverthorne, estaba entusiasmada por contribuir a la comunidad. Isabel creció en Denver y se mudó al Condado de Summit en 2014 para dar clases de segundo grado en la escuela primaria Dillon Valley, donde ayudó a establecer el programa de baile folclórico de la escuela. Después de cuatro años de enseñanza, Isabel estaba lista para un cambio y decidió presentar su candidatura a la Mesa Directiva de Silverthorne mientras obtenía su maestría en liderazgo artístico y gestión cultural en la Universidad Estatal de Colorado en Fort Collins. «El arte y la creatividad están muy arraigados en la cultura mexicana y se presentan en muchas formas, desde la música hasta la danza y el pensamiento creativo», dijo Isabel. «Quería elevar esa parte de mi cultura y compartir con otros la alegría que me brinda».

Como miembro de la Mesa Directiva de Arte, Isabel vio el Primer Viernes de febrero como una oportunidad para compartir su herencia mexicana y destacar la diversidad del Condado de Summit en un escenario más amplio. «Al vivir en el Condado de Summit y crecer allí, siempre sentí que había mucha diversidad en nuestra comunidad, pero no siempre se celebraba, o a veces la gente se quedaba atrapada en su burbuja y no intentaba salir de ella. Todos los eventos comunitarios eran iguales y tenían la misma comida, música y público».

«Recuerdo haberme reunido muchas veces con Sydney Drake (directora de Arte, Eventos y Espacios) en el Centro de Recreación de Silverthorne para hablar de mis ideas y crear juntas un evento inclusivo». Isabel continúa: «La Noche de Candela se inspiró en el Día de la Candelaria y el Año Nuevo Lunar». Esta celebración es un sincretismo de tradiciones católicas, españolas e indígenas. Se considera un tiempo de nuevos comienzos y purificación y está vinculada al inicio del ciclo agrícola. «Me centré mucho en la idea del cierre de un ciclo y la búsqueda de la luz en el frío del invierno. Las farolillas vinieron del uso de velas, de la idea de buscar y crear nuestra propia luz», explica Isabel.

Otros elementos incorporados al evento fueron la música en vivo y el baile de salsa. «En ese momento, Remezcla acababa de empezar, y el Primer Viernes parecía el lugar perfecto para que comenzaran su carrera».

El Año Nuevo Lunar también tiene lugar en la misma época del año. «Me encantaba que diferentes culturas de diferentes partes del mundo celebraran el mismo concepto en la misma época del año. Quería llevar esa celebración a Silverthorne», explicó Isabel.

El Festival de las Linternas de los Deseos del Primer Viernes de febrero se llamaba originalmente Noche de Candela. Al pensar en el nombre, Isabel quería capturar el sentimiento y los elementos del evento. «Candela en español se refiere al calor que emite una vela y al calor y brillo del sudor que desprende el cuerpo cuando se baila y se celebra juntos, el tipo de calor que se necesita en febrero. Combinando estos elementos es como se me ocurrió el nombre de Noche de Candela para el Primer Viernes de febrero. »

Desde su creación, el Primer Viernes de febrero ha crecido y evolucionado, al igual que su nombre. En el Festival de las Linternas de los Deseos, los miembros de la comunidad pueden seguir celebrando la fusión de tradiciones culturales mientras damos la bienvenida al nuevo año, disfrutamos de música en vivo con Remezcla, decoramos farolillos de deseos y terminamos la noche con una danza del dragón a cargo del Centro de Patrimonio Cultural Asiático de Colorado. También estás invitado a traer un deseo o una intención para compartir. Al recordar el Primer Viernes de febrero, Isabel dijo: «Me encanta este evento; es mi contribución a mi comunidad. Fue una solución creativa a la pregunta de cómo incorporar la diversidad cultural en un evento en una época del año en la que tenemos mucho en común. ¡La diversidad de nuestra comunidad es muy valiosa! Nuestra gente es más que simples trabajadores; todos podemos ser creadores y disfrutar nuestras alegrías si se nos da la oportunidad».
